UPCOMING EVENTS

April 18 - Earth Day at the Zoo; 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.:

  • Wild Ones will share a booth with the Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy.  Potted native plants will be on display.  Children can make a flowerpot out of newspaper, plant a native plant seed, and watch it grow.
  • All Species Parade: The Louisville Nature Center (LNC) invites Wild Ones to participate in the annual All Species Parade, held in conjunction with Earth Day at the Zoo.  Wild Ones (adults & children) can parade as Purple Coneflowers and other native plants!!!  The idea is to honor Mother Earth and all the creatures who co-exist here with us! The parade will begin at the LNC at noon, cross Trevilian Way, into the Zoo, wind through the Earth Day exhibits, and end about 1:00 p.m at the MetaZoo stage.  Anyone interested in participating should call the LNC at 458-1328.  See Wish List; it would be great to have some flower heads for costumes!
April 20 - Monthly Meeting at Louisville Nature Center - 7:00 p.m.
What is a Herbarium?
Guest Speaker: Patricia Dalton Haragan, Associate Curator of the Uof L Davies Herbarium and author of Weeds of Kentucky and Adjacent States, will talk about the role of herbaria in botanical research.  She will discuss field and collecting techniques and procedures for maintaining specimen collections.
April 24 - Wild Ones in Cherokee Park - 9:00 a.m.- noon
Patricia Haragan will lead the Plant Survey Team as we identify the plants in our adopted site.  This is a great informal way to learn some basic plant taxonomy.
April 25 - Plant Sale Louisville Nature Center - 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Connie May will give a slide show on gardening with natives at 1:30 p.m.  Volunteers are needed to help work a Wild Ones table.
May 18 - Monthly Meeting at Jefferson Memorial Forest -  6:30 p.m.
Meet at the Welcome Center, 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, Fairdale, KY.  They have been doing prescribed burns at The Forest for years.  We will tour the transitional forest and see the various stages of regeneration occurring there.  Take the Gene Snyder to New Cut Road, go left at end of ramp, go +/- 1 mi., at yellow flashing light (just before the Dairy Queen) turn right onto Mitchell Hill Road, go two miles to the Welcome Center on your left.
May 22 - Wild Ones in Cherokee Park - 9:00 a.m.- noon.
June 15  - Monthly Meeting at Bernheim Forest -

Meet at the Arboretum Center parking lot (same as last year).  Margaret Shea, Natural Areas Director, will lead us on a tour of the meadow.  They burned this meadow for the first time last year and are doing a second burn this spring.  A limited area of the meadow will be seeded with native grasses in May.  Margaret will also take us behind the gates to an area of the research forest where they have done a small experimental burn in a old food plot.
