Native Vegetation at Work
24th Annual Roadside Conference
Quality Inn & Suites--Ames, Iowa
Hosted by Story County
We go to great lengths in roadsides to emphasize that we are not so much doing prairie restoration as we are using native vegetation to serve a roadside purpose. We love the prairie ecosystem, the habitat and the physical beauty. But it's the practicality and function of this plant community that drives its use in road right-of-way. As long-lived perennials adapted to local growing conditions, able to handle poor soils and being incomparably deep-rooted, prairie plants provide great value as sustainable, hard working vegetation for road right-of-way.
