Our St. Croix Oak Savanna Chapter was formed in 2003 and sponsors monthly programs by enthusiasts and experts on native plants and natural landscapes. Meetings are normally free and open to the public. Special events may include a registration fee to help cover costs. Cold weather (indoor) meetings for 2011 are shifting both day and location. We will meet on the SECOND Thursday of the month at the the FamilyMeans Building, 1875 Northwestern Ave. in Stillwater. Socializing begins at 6:30 pm with our speaker at 7 pm. Warm weather garden tours and field trips are typically held Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. See our Chapter Calendar below for details. We welcome all levels of plant and gardening enthusiast. Join us to learn more about Minnesota and Wisconsin native plants and how they can enhance our outdoor spaces.

Tour of Iris and George Meyer-Guthman's Gardens

Iris and George describe starting on their half-acre garden eight years ago "with a blank slate except for a dozen mature trees and a horrible lawn. The original plan, laid out our first winter, has been expanded-on steadily through the years, so there’s not much of the ‘lawn’ left, though it’s still horrible. We have a great variety of plants as we have worked towards creating a more natural, layered, garden with sun, shade and everything in between. Many of our plants are Minnesota natives but also include many species plants from around the world and more traditional plants, particularly where we needed something rabbits wouldn’t eat. Much of the garden expansion, including woodland areas and a 10’ by 120’ prairie area planted on city right of way two years ago, has been accomplished using plants that have been seed-propagated from our own plants. We’ve done all the work ourselves, including bringing home rocks to provide natural accents and edge all the beds. Here you’ll find a quietly exciting garden with something for everyone to enjoy."

Plan to stay for refreshments at the end of the tour.
