Garden Tour at the
Sanderson Property
In 1992 Tami Sanderson purchased 10 acres of overgrazed horse pasture and a
home near Keeneland. With the help/advice from KY Fish and Wildlife and the KY
TNC biologists and botanists, she has restored this land to a native habitat
that includes a tall grass meadow and a riparian zone with meandering stream.
Tami's primary goal is to support neo-tropical migratory songbirds. Tami says
that the gardens have become overgrown this summer because her mother's illness
requires a lot of her attention, so she notes that the gardens are Ònot
necessarily human inviting but the songbirds haven't minded.Ó I'm sure they
love it!
In Tami's words: ÒEveryone is welcome, my ability to name plants is limited. I
plant native species, forget their names, then move on
to another part of the garden. So bringing along a native species botanist will
make the tour more informative for your members. My knowledge will be in the
process of restoration for songbirds, soil types and maintenance, and stream
restoration. The neighbor's adjacent 10 acre property is exactly the same as
mine was 15 years ago and offers excellent comparisons between an essentially
sterile environment and one with abundant bio diversity.Ó
