February Brainerd Chapter Wild Ones event:
Spring Seeding Special: Native Seed Propagation and use of Natives in the Landscape - by Bonnie Hinniker, owner, Sunshine Gardens, Pine River, MN
Bonnie (the Plant Lady) Hinniker will lead a conversation on what it takes to gather, store, process and germinate native plant seeds in north central Minnesota. This will be an interactive discussion intended to give newbies an orientation, and provide an opportunity for attendees to learn from each other. Native plant seeds germinate best when treated as naturally as possible. By observing the natural process of seed dispersal and germination we can replicate that process as closely as possible. Please join us as Bonnie shares her tips and tricks for spring native plant seeding.
Bonnie is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and has over 30 years experience in garden design, installation and care. Also known as “Bonnie the Plant Lady” on KAXE Northern Community Radio, she is the owner of Sunshine Gardens Nursery and Landscaping, INC., a source for quality native and non-native perennials, grasses, annuals, trees, shrubs, vines and herbs including shoreland plants.
Free to public.

Brainerd Garden Club meeting at Northland Arboretum
Wild gardening – Not only will this presentation warm you up by thinking about summer… it will warm your spirit too as you learn how wild (native) gardens contribute to the natural flow of a local healthy environment. Eleanor Burkett, President of the Brainerd Chapter of Wild Ones, will share how native gardening can help to increase plant diversity, which in turn will contribute to wildlife habitat and help keep our lakes and rivers clean and even help with reducing the atmospheric carbon that is a contributing factor in climate change. She will also discuss how to select native plants for your garden and how to incorporate them into your existing landscape.
